Privacy Policy
This notice explains what we do with your personal data when you buy from us, contact us or browse the shop at https://www.appliancediscounts.co.uk. We sell to UK addresses only, and we handle your data under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
Who is responsible for your data
The data controller is APPLIANCE DISCOUNTS LTD, registered in England and Wales under company number 17294952 and trading as Appliance Discounts. Write to us at Units 8 and 9 Armley Link Trading Estate, Leeds, LS12 2QN, United Kingdom, email shop@appliancediscounts.co.uk or call 0113 459 2535. There is more on our company information page.
What personal data we collect
- Order details: your name, delivery and billing address, email address and telephone number.
- Payment data: the result of the payment, the card type and the last few digits. Your full card number is entered on our payment provider’s systems, so we never see or store it.
- Account and contact data: any account you open, and the emails, calls and messages you send us.
- Returns and service data: what you bought, what went wrong and what we did about it.
- Technical data: IP address, device and browser type and the pages you view, collected through cookies.
- Marketing data: whether you have opted in to our emails and whether you open them.
Nearly all of this comes from you; technical data is collected automatically as you use the site. We do not buy marketing lists and we do not ask for special category data such as health information.
Why we use it and the lawful basis
- Taking your order and payment, dispatching the goods and keeping you updated: performance of our contract with you.
- Answering questions you ask before you buy: steps taken at your request before entering a contract.
- Handling a cancellation under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, and handling a claim that goods are faulty, not as described or not fit for purpose under the Consumer Rights Act 2015: compliance with a legal obligation.
- Handling a return, exchange or refund under our own 30-day free returns promise: performance of our contract with you.
- Keeping sales, VAT and refund records: compliance with a legal obligation under tax law.
- Preventing fraud, keeping the site secure and dealing with legal claims: our legitimate interests.
- Measuring how the shop is used through analytics cookies: your consent.
- Sending you marketing emails: your consent.
Where we rely on legitimate interests, we have weighed them against your rights and proceed only where our interest does not override them.
So that the purposes above are clear about the rights behind them: the 2013 Regulations give you 14 days from the day you receive the goods to cancel your order, and a further 14 days after telling us to send the goods back. Our 30-day free returns promise, with free return postage, sits on top of that statutory right and never replaces or limits it. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you rights against us as the retailer you bought from, and those rights are separate from any guarantee a manufacturer chooses to offer. Our returns and refunds page sets all of this out in full.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your data and never pass it to anyone for their own marketing. We share only what is needed: with our payment provider to take and refund payments, with Royal Mail to deliver your order, with the platform that hosts our website and shop, with professional advisers such as accountants or solicitors where we need advice or must produce records, and with public authorities including HMRC where the law requires it.
Anyone who processes your data on our behalf does so under a written contract and only on our instructions. Advisers and public authorities receive data in their own right, and use it under their own legal duties.
Sending data outside the UK
We aim to keep your data in the United Kingdom. Where a service such as hosting or email stores or accesses it elsewhere, we allow that only if the country is covered by UK adequacy regulations, or the transfer is protected by the International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum to the EU standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
- Order, invoice and refund records: six years after the end of the financial year they relate to, because HMRC requires it.
- Returns and faulty goods correspondence: six years, so we can deal with a claim under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
- Enquiries that do not lead to an order: two years from our last exchange.
- Marketing records: until you withdraw consent, then a note that you opted out so we do not contact you again.
- Analytics data: no longer than 26 months.
- Account data: until you close the account, after which only what tax law requires is kept.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- be told how your data is used, which is what this notice does;
- ask for a copy of the data we hold about you;
- have inaccurate or incomplete data corrected;
- ask us to erase data we no longer have a reason to keep;
- ask us to restrict use of your data while a question about it is resolved;
- receive data you gave us in a portable, machine readable form;
- object to processing based on our legitimate interests;
- object to direct marketing at any time, which we must always honour;
- withdraw consent at any time, without affecting anything done before you withdrew it; and
- not be subject to a decision made solely by automated means with legal or similarly significant effects. We make no decisions of that kind.
Some of these rights apply only in certain circumstances. For example, we cannot erase order records we are required by tax law to keep, and we will explain if that is the case.
To use any of these rights, email shop@appliancediscounts.co.uk or write to the registered office above. We reply within one month, and will tell you if a complex request needs longer, which the law allows by up to two further months. There is no charge, though we may ask for enough information to be sure we are dealing with the right person.
Cookies and consent
Strictly necessary cookies keep your basket, session and checkout working, and need no consent because the shop cannot run without them. Analytics and other non-essential cookies are set only after you agree in the cookie banner, as the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 require. You can change or withdraw that choice at any time, and block or delete cookies in your browser, although parts of the shop may then stop working.
Marketing and opting out
We send marketing emails only to people who have asked for them, in line with the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003. Every email carries an unsubscribe link, and you can also email us to be removed. Messages about an order you have placed, such as dispatch and delivery confirmations, are not marketing and continue either way.
Security and complaints
We use encrypted connections, limit access to the people who need it, and keep our systems up to date. If a personal data breach happens, we record it and assess the risk. Where the law requires, we report it to the Information Commissioner’s Office within 72 hours, and where a breach is likely to result in a high risk to your rights and freedoms we tell you as well.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, tell us first so we can put it right. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office, the UK supervisory authority, at ico.org.uk. That does not affect your right to take legal action.
Changes to this notice
We update this notice when our use of data changes or the law moves on, and the current version always sits on this page. Last updated: 18 September 2026. See also our terms and conditions and returns and refunds policy.
